about

This September, Yusoul Records returns with its long-awaited second compilation, ‘Yusoul Volume 2’. Following Yusoul’s first experimental composition back in 2013, label head Skit has spent his time producing, curating gigs around London, and handling Yusoul’s Radar Radio show. He is a pivotal member of the wavemob collective and has contributed to all three of their seminal mixtapes. He has also released twice via Plastician’s prestigious Terrorhythm label.

Three years on from ‘Volume 1’, Yusoul has aligned itself heavily with the emerging Wave genre. For this latest release, Skit has assembled a hefty roaster of Wave talent to join him in showcasing different facets of the sound. Listeners have come to expect unwaveringly high quality from Yusoul, which sets itself apart from scene contemporaries by dropping music scarcely. Releases are highly anticipated owing to the label head’s discerning ear and high capacity for quality-control.

‘Yusoul Volume 2’ draws largely on sensitive emotional soundscapes, opening with ‘Guardian’, an archetypal icy Wave track from Skit’s wavemob colleague Noah B. Skit’s own contribution to the volume is ‘Juneau’, another classic Wave record which radiates with positivity; reminding the listener of a cold, optimistic Alaskan morning.

Right from its conception, Yusoul has always given a platform to under-represented artists, and ‘Yusoul Volume 2’ is no exception to this trend. The compilation features up-and-coming artist whtvs, who showcases his downtempo production ability on the blissfully serene ‘Without U’. Dontleaveme is another little-known name who features on the compilation with the haunting ‘Are You Trying To Get Free? Why?’ The relatively unknown Skeler and Ytho collaborate on the huge exit track, ‘Final Call’.

On ‘Pink Cocaina’ hip hop duo TailrMdeLvn use their avant-garde lyricism to express romantic sentiments over a solemn beat, courtesy of Txmmy. Wave don Anubis-XXI contributes ‘Adiaphorus’ to the release – a track which shimmers with melancholy.

‘Yusoul Volume 2’ is one of the Wave scene’s first major compilations to come from a distributor other than wavemob. It is a collection of decidedly sensitive sounds which signals a new chapter in the progression of Yusoul, whilst adding a new silken layer to the wave consciousness.
